Agenda

I. Generative AI in Law: How It Works, How to Use It, and How to Manage the Risk | 1:00pm – 2:00pm

This CLE provides a practical, lawyer-focused guide to generative AI in real-world legal and business settings. We will start with a concise guide of how large language models work at a useful level for attorneys, then translate that into actionable guidance for responsible adoption in legal practice, including confidentiality, verification, and malpractice risk. The session will also cover the contracting issues that come up when clients buy, build, or sell AI-enabled services, and close with a practical view of deployment in government and enterprise environments, including procurement and governance controls, plus a brief look ahead at agentic AI beyond chatbots.

It explores the practical implications of generative AI for attorneys, highlighting real-world scenarios where AI intersects with client advice, litigation strategy, and business operations. Lawyers will gain insight into identifying potential pitfalls in AI outputs, understanding their professional obligations when supervising AI-assisted work, and mitigating liability in fast-evolving technology contexts. The discussion also addresses strategic considerations when negotiating or reviewing AI-related contracts, with an emphasis on protecting intellectual property, managing security risks, and allocating responsibility effectively. Participants will examine how organizations—both public and private—structure AI adoption and governance to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.

Break | 2:00pm – 2:10pm

II. Practical AI Integration for Lawyers: Efficiency, Ethics, and Governance | 2:10pm – 3:10pm

Generative AI tools are rapidly entering legal practice, but effective integration requires intentional design. This CLE session moves beyond headline-grabbing predictions to address the practical questions attorneys face: How do you identify workflows where AI delivers genuine efficiency gains? What upfront investment is required to implement AI thoughtfully? How do you establish governance structures that enable innovation while maintaining professional responsibility? Attendees will leave with concrete frameworks for assessing AI opportunities, implementing tools responsibly, and establishing sustainable governance practices.

It focuses on translating AI knowledge into actionable workflow improvements and strategic decision-making. Attorneys will learn how to evaluate which tasks benefit most from AI, optimize processes without compromising quality, and measure the impact of technology on efficiency and cost. The session also covers establishing ongoing oversight mechanisms, monitoring tool performance over time, and creating repeatable systems that maintain ethical standards and client trust in AI-augmented practice.
