Program Summary

SSR 24-3p Made the VE Cross Harder. Here Is One Approach That Covers Most of It

The ground has shifted. Since SSR 24-3p, putting together a comprehensive cross examination of the vocational witness has been harder. The popular approaches each answer part of the problem — this session combines several of them into one approach that should cover most instances.

The cross is bigger than the hearing room. Preparation before the hearing shapes what the questioning can reach. Execution during the hearing determines what testimony you obtain. The work after the hearing decides whether that information gets used — and knowing why it is important is what makes it count.

You walk out with the combined approach in hand: a comprehensive vocational-witness cross built for the post–SSR 24-3p landscape, guidance for before, during, and after the hearing, and a clear understanding of how to use the information you obtain and why it matters.

Eligible for up to 1 CLE Credit Hour

This session was originally submitted for CLE as a live, in-person presentation and a live webcast for the 2026 Fall National Conference and may be eligible for self-study credit. Each state handles self-study credit differently; for questions, please consult your State Bar Association.

Recorded Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Key topics to be discussed:

  • Cross After SSR 24-3p
Why SSR 24-3p has made a comprehensive cross examination of the vocational witness harder to build.
  • One Combined Approach
An approach that should cover most instances, combining several of the popular current approaches.
  • Before the Hearing
Preparing the vocational witness cross before the hearing begins.
  • During the Hearing
Executing the cross examination of the vocational witness at the hearing.
  • After the Hearing
What to do with the cross once the hearing ends.
  • Using the Information
How to use the information obtained and why it is important.
